If you’re just starting out in your professional career and are looking to branch out and find new opportunities, you may be a perfect candidate to become a security guard in Ontario. Figuring out what your next steps are when looking to start a new career path can be confusing, and sometimes we all need a little guidance as to what to do and where to go. At PADS, safety and security are what we excel in, and we commend anyone who is thinking of becoming an Ontario security guard, so we put together a quick guide to help you with your first steps.
Start With The Paperwork
Like any new course or job, the first step to taking security guard training and eventually obtaining your security guard licence is providing proper documentation, meaning your photo ID, proof of eligibility to work in Canada, and a guarantor to act as a witness and sign that your information is valid. It’s also necessary that you are over the age of eighteen, and that you have a current and valid AID/CPR certificate that can be obtained through the Canadian Red Cross.
Go Through Training and Get Licensed
Once you’re signed up properly and ready to start, the next step is to take an accredited Ontario Security Guard Basic Training Course online. You can register for this course through our website, where it will train you quickly and efficiently. Basic training will teach you an array of things, like how to handle public relations, an introduction to law, as well as WHMIS, in order for you to be fully prepared for what awaits you as a security professional.
Once you’ve completed the training, you can move on and take the Ministry’s Ontario Security Guard Test to receive your license so you can start working! This is a one-time, sixty multiple-choice question test that you must complete within seventy-five minutes. This test can be taken at select DriveTest centres across Ontario, and your results will be sent back to you within two days. Once your test is finished and passed, you will receive your Ontario security guard license, and you’re ready to get working!
Uphold Security Values and Conduct Through Your Career
Once you’ve obtained your license, you’re able to work anywhere in Ontario in many different forms of security. This will open an array of different career paths and opportunities for your future! At PADS, we uphold the Private Security and Investigative Services Act of 2005 that assures Ontario security guards to act with honesty and integrity, to treat everyone equally and without discrimination, and to comply with federal, provincial, and municipal laws. This is the most important part of becoming and staying a security guard in Ontario.
